At The Orangeblowfish, we retain, mentor and nurture talent and believe that top performers contribute to our Agency’s success. We promote diversity and we believe that this is key to our success. Our multi-cultural team includes members from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, China, Singapore, Malaysia, France, the US, Canada and Mexico. Our diverse background is where the magic happens!

On top of this, we are strong advocates for advancing women in the creative industry. More than 80% of our team are women, including three of our senior team members: our Managing Partner, Client Services Director, and Creative Lead.

And now, we’re proud to add another talented woman to our team. Meet Yuzhen, our graphic designer, who joined the company a year ago. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the UK, and after graduating from the Royal College of Art (RCA), she decided to return to China and build her creative career here, in Shanghai. Let’s get to know her!

TOBF: Tell us a bit about your background.

Yuzhen: After high school, I studied mathematics for a year and a half and realized that I didn’t like it. So I took a gap year and became an apprentice tattoo artist. My parents were very supportive of me exploring my interests, and sent me to the UK to study journalism and sociology. During the first year, I discovered a passion for art and my tutors encouraged me to pursue it. I applied to the University of Arts London (UAL) to study Illustration and did my Masters at RCA.

TOBF: Why did you choose to come back to China after your studies?

Yuzhen: While studying at the Royal College of Art, I did a research project on the concept of home among Asian immigrants. As part of this project, I interviewed many children who grew up in different countries, with different cultures, and I realized that I didn’t know much about my own culture. I was very interested in modern Chinese art and I wanted to find out more by myself.

TOBF: Do you recommend that Chinese overseas students return to China after graduation?

Yuzhen: As Chinese national studying abroad, we know the local culture and the western culture, and these are the advantages that we should emphasize and use. There are more opportunities in China for designers coming back from overseas to develop their career. Since coming back to China, I have had the chance to work with big brands and I continue to learn a lot by being exposed to different things.

The Orangeblowfish is sponsoring the Best Emerging Talent (BET) Festival organized by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai.

The event is a celebration of emerging talent returning from the UK’s best creative institutes. This Festival aims to directly introduce fresh creative talent to international agencies and businesses across China who are seeking quality talent.

There’s only a few days left to purchase your ticket. Check out our Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn for more information.
